Today we finished the Orange County beaches. We left Laguna Beach and drove through Newport Beach, Huntingdon Beach and up to Seal Beach.
Faye, for the first time on our trip was quite unwell through the night so wasn’t feeling 100% for today so I didn’t want to overdo it.
We drove up to Newport Beach (20 minutes) and went over to Balboa Island and got the Auto Ferry to the Balboa Peninsula. The Ferry is $1 each and takes 5 minutes, you can drive round but its exciting to do something different. We parked up and explored Balboa Pier and Newport Pier. The area around Newport Pier appeared slightly tacky which I didn’t expect, but the beaches were lovely. Parking can be quite tricky as there isn’t much an you either need a credit card or quarters to pay. Always have plenty of quarters!
We then got back in the car and drive through Huntingdon Beach and all the way up to Seal Bech which is the end of Orange County. Huntingdon Beach is the major one for surfing and in a few days time there is a big competition happening. Seal Beach is really nice, it’s quiet and not at all commercial. Every Wednesday they have free concerts on the pier.
We then drove back to Costa Mesa, around 8 miles from Newport Beach to our hotel located near John Wayne Airport. We stayed at the Ayres Hotel. Most expensive at $200 a night! And to be honest you didn’t get anymore for your money than in any of the other much cheaper ones, just fancier paintings on the wall! People moaned on trip advisor about the noise of the planes, well yes it is next to an airport so yes you will hear planes, but we didn’t hear any from our room.
